Rukia Lumumba on The Southern Electoral Tide

The 2020 election revealed to many what Southern and Southwestern organizers have known for a long time: patient organizing across the Sunbelt can permanently change the political landscape in this country in our favor. Rukia Lumumba joins host Montague Simmons to discuss the M4BL Electoral Justice Project’s role in this election, the ongoing struggle for governing power in Mississippi, and the strategic importance of the South for the left.

Rukia Lumumba

Rukia Lumumba is a transformative justice strategist, human rights activist, and the Founder of the People’s Advocacy Institute. She works with communities to develop alternative responses to crime, and has prevented the incarceration of 4200 young people of color. Her vision for her work is drawn from her family, a long line of freedom fighters. She is the daughter of the late Mayor Chokwe Lumumba and Nubia Lumumba of Jackson, Mississippi.

Montague Simmons

Montague Simmons is a community organizer and human rights activist. A native of St. Louis, Montague has worked to build movements locally and nationally that are rooted in building Black political power and self-determination, advancing the leadership of oppressed nationalities and gender identities and centering the most marginalized. During the Ferguson Uprisings, Montague was a co-convener of the Don’t Shoot Coalition and at the time led the Organization for Black Struggle (OBS). Since leaving OBS he has continued to work to build just economy, confront police violence and to build alternative structures to advance participatory and protagonist democracy.
